Public Relations Communications Officer

Our UK based client is a minority-rights focused NGO seeking a Public Relations Communications Officer to join their growing team. The organisation works globally to empower marginalised communities and promote inclusive governance, with a focus on human rights, social justice, and sustainable peace.

The successful candidate will lead communications and public engagement initiatives to enhance the organisation’s profile, secure international media coverage, and engage key audiences and supporters. This role is ideal for someone with strong writing skills, a strategic mindset, and a passion for meaningful social impact.

This is a remote position open to those living anywhere in South Africa.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a robust communications and public engagement strategy
  • Write and disseminate press releases, media briefings, and award submissions
  • Manage and maintain the organisation’s website and social media channels
  • Craft engaging content for newsletters, blogs, digital campaigns, and public updates
  • Ensure consistent, strategic messaging aligned with the organisation’s mission and tone
  • Grow audience engagement and digital presence across all platforms
  • Secure international media coverage and public recognition for the organisation’s work
  • Position leadership and programme staff as speakers at high-profile panels and events
  • Build and maintain a database of supporters, influencers, and media contacts
  • Support planning and promotion of fundraising and awareness campaigns
  • Track performance and prepare reports on communications impact and audience reach
  • Facilitate team participation in sector events, conferences, and stakeholder forums
  • Enhance visual storytelling and strengthen the organisation’s public image
  • Research communication trends and practices of peer organisations for benchmarking

Skills, Experience & Requirements

  • 2–5 years of experience in communications, PR, media, or public engagement
  • Excellent writing and editing skills with a keen eye for tone and clarity
  • Proficiency with digital tools such as Microsoft Office, Canva, Google Suite, and website CMS
  • Experience managing social media channels and producing multi-platform content
  • Proven ability to grow audiences and increase media visibility
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects independently
  • Comfortable working with sensitive content and international audiences
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Professionalism and confidence in representing the organisation externally
  • A relevant university degree or professional qualification in Communications, Media, Public Relations, or similar
  • Genuine interest in human rights, peacebuilding, and global development issues
