Our client is the engineering consultancy of choice for businesses focused on innovative solutions in the water and sewage treatment industry. They are dedicated to delivering comprehensive and technically advanced engineering services to help organizations meet their operational and sustainability goals. They provide a wide range of engineering solutions, including feasibility studies, detailed mechanical designs, hydraulic calculations, and multidisciplinary design management. They are looking for a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join their team. As a Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for generating innovative and technically differentiated solutions, conducting extensive hydraulic calculations, managing multidisciplinary design teams, and fostering positive client relationships. You will work closely with the MEICA Manager to ensure that the company’s engineering objectives are met. The ideal candidate has extensive experience in water and sewage treatment processes, a strong commercial and contractual awareness, and a proven track record of success in mechanical engineering design and management.

This is a remote position open to those living anywhere in South Africa.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Generate innovative and technically differentiated solutions to add value for clients
  • Conduct and produce extensive hydraulic calculations, including pipelines, pump duties, and screen installations
  • Foster and develop positive relationships with business partners and key clients
  • Manage multidisciplinary design teams and conduct feasibility, outline, and detailed design
  • Estimate bids/proposals fees and hours for design schemes
  • Conduct technical reviews and contribute to the company’s technical assurance function
  • Demonstrate commercial and contractual awareness
  • Conduct site surveys and assess plant capacity for future demands
  • Develop feasibility, outline, and detailed mechanical designs, including P&IDs, hydraulic design, design risk assessments, control philosophies, commissioning strategies, cost and program estimations, plant and equipment specifications, and carbon calculations
  • Write technical reports at all project lifecycle stages and liaise with clients within the UK
  • Produce general arrangement drawings and detailed mechanical design drawings
  • Support or lead bids, fee proposals, or offers of service, and develop activity schedules/work plans
  • Understand and apply DSEAR, CDM, WIMES, British and European Standards, and other statutory, regulatory, and non-regulatory provisions and guidance
  • Participate in Hazard Studies, including HAZOP, Access, Lifting, and Maintenance
  • Develop standard and bespoke design solutions for the water industry and beyond
  • Review and check calculations and reports prepared by others
  • Consider CAPEX and OPEX implications of design decisions at all project stages
  • Undertake secondments to support key clients and business partners

Skills, Experience & Requirements

  • A BEng, BSc, or equivalent in a mechanical discipline with Chartered Engineer status is preferred
  • Extensive experience in water and sewage treatment processes and equipment/system requirements
  • Proficiency with hydraulic calculations, including pipelines, pump duties, and screen installations
  • Experience in producing general arrangement and detailed mechanical design drawings
  • Strong understanding and application of DSEAR, CDM, WIMES, British and European Standards, and other statutory, regulatory, and non-regulatory provisions and guidance
  • Knowledge and experience in conducting feasibility, outline, and detailed mechanical designs, including P&IDs, design risk assessments, control philosophies, commissioning strategies, cost and program estimations, plant and equipment specifications, and carbon calculations
  • Proficiency in using CAD software for engineering drawings
  • Ability to estimate bids/proposals fees and hours for design schemes
  • Experience in managing multidisciplinary design teams and technical reviews
  • Competence in supporting or leading bids, fee proposals, or offers of service and developing activity schedules/work plans
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to liaise effectively with clients within the UK and foster positive relationships with business partners and key clients
  • Strong interpersonal skills for managing and mentoring junior engineers and collaborating with team members
  • Strong analytical skills to conduct extensive hydraulic calculations and technical reviews
  • Ability to generate innovative and technically differentiated solutions to engineering problems
  • Capability to consider CAPEX and OPEX implications of design decisions at all project stages
