Our client is the engineering consultancy of choice for businesses focused on innovative solutions in the water and sewage treatment industry. They are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Civil Engineer to join their dynamic team. The successful candidate will apply their expertise to a variety of projects, including both new builds and the assessment of existing steel and reinforced concrete civil structures. The role requires a collaborative professional who can lead projects, ensure high-quality deliverables, and contribute to the growth and development of our client’s capabilities.
This is a remote position open to those living anywhere in South Africa.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Undertake technical design and analysis for both new build and existing steel, reinforced concrete civil structures, using appropriate structural analysis and design packages
- Follow local and national guidance for structural engineering practices
- Prepare, review, and approve structural designs to ensure they meet project requirements and standards
- Inspect existing structures, diagnose issues, and make recommendations for re-use or adaptation
- Apply knowledge and experience either independently or while supervising a team
- Lead the implementation of high levels of quality, sustainability, and safety at all stages of the design and asset lifecycle
- Ensure that projects are delivered on time and within budget, meeting all milestones and program requirements
- Collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders at all levels, both in-house and with external partners, to support multi-disciplinary project delivery
- Forge and maintain strong client relationships, acting as a client-facing representative of the client
- Support the preparation of briefs, scopes of work, and input into bid proposals
- Assist in the development of project plans, resource allocation, and fee estimation
- Lead efforts to incorporate sustainability into all projects, including the re-use of existing structures and materials, and design for low-carbon construction
- Stay informed about and implement emerging construction techniques and technologies
- Contribute to the growth and development of both individual team members and the broader business
- Provide mentorship and support to colleagues, fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment
- Participate in resource planning and business management activities to ensure the successful delivery of projects
Skills, Experience & Requirements
- Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
- Chartered Engineer status, with membership in IStructE (Institution of Structural Engineers) or ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers)
- Detailed knowledge of structural engineering codes, including Eurocodes and British Standards (BSI)
- Extensive experience in reinforced concrete (RC) design and detailing, particularly with water retaining and soil retaining structures, and foundation design
- Proficiency in steelwork design
- Working knowledge of geotechnics and soil-structure interactions
- Proficient in using structural analysis and design packages
- Knowledge of computational analysis techniques and software
- Proven track record of commitment to sustainability, including the re-use of existing structures and materials, and designing for low-carbon construction
- Knowledge of established and emerging construction techniques
- Ability to contribute to project and business management, including resource planning and fee estimation
- Excellent client-facing skills with the ability to forge and maintain strong client relationships
- Strong communication skills, capable of explaining complex structural concepts to a range of audiences including clients, contractors, and colleagues
- Collaborative team player with the ability to lead and participate in multi-disciplinary teams
- Understanding of cost and contract management is an advantage
- Familiarity with Building Information Modeling (BIM) is an advantage
- Experience in the water/utilities sector is advantageous
